Gift Wrapping for Beginners

This is a short guide for young people who may be new to wrapping gifts. By following it you will learn how to make a gift look attractive and enhance the pleasure of both the giver and the receiver.

In order to follow this guide you will need the following items: a box of suitable size for the gift; transparent sticky tape; wrapping paper; ribbon and a gift card.

First you should ensure that you have everything you need to complete the job and put them on a clean table or other flat surface. Next examine the gift carefully for any price tags. This is important as it can be embarrassing to receive a gift with the price tag attached.

Next you should place the gift inside the gift box and close the box.  Lie the box down lengthwise on top of the wrapping paper then wrap the paper around the box with an overlap of about four centimetres. Make sure that there is sufficient spare paper at the ends so that the box will be completely covered when these are folded over.

Mark out the area of paper that you need to cut. You can use a ruler and a pencil to make sure that your lines are straight. Then carefully cut the paper to size.

Lay out the piece of paper you have cut and place the gift box in the centre with the top of the box sitting on the paper and making sure that it is correctly orientated with the long side of the box parallel to the long side of the paper.

The next job is to fold the paper to enclose the box.  First fold one side over the bottom of the box followed by the other side. Fold the longer side of the paper underneath so that you have a smooth crease showing. With the longer end on top secure it with transparent sticky tape.

Fold the corners of one side into a triangle and then the next, bringing them across the top of the package. Stick it down with tape and then do the same at the other end. Make sure that everything is neat and secure.

Wrap your ribbon lengthways round the box, cross it over, wrap it widthways, cross it over again and tie a bow.   Finally you can put your gift card under the bow for a perfectly wrapped gift.
